Introduction of a concentrate of good quality sperm into the uterus is termed as Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI). The sperms are then washed in sterile medium and concentrated to obtain a small volume of highly motile sperm. The insemination is done, at the time of ovulation.

This process is highly beneficial for women with problems in ovulation, endometriosis with patent tubes, cervical factor and polycystic ovarian disease. In the case of men, IUI is only beneficial, if there is a reasonable amount of sperm of good motility. Both men and women can try IUI first before opting for more advanced techniques.
